Keo Nozari’s magical new music video “Belong” takes flight!!

“A dreamy slice of positivity” — Billboard.com (on Keo Nozari’s song “Belong”)

As a queer man, there’s a constant evolution of coming out. Different layers of finding true comfort with yourself. The “Belong” song serves as the centerpiece to my HEADSPACE album, detailing my journey from overcoming the need for validation from others to being able to find value within myself. So for the video, I wanted it to illustrate that evolution, and the butterfly as a symbol of creating and re-creating yourself resonated with me. The classic metaphor of the butterfly has been employed countless times as a symbol of transformation and freedom. It was fun to take the imagery and make it my own!

The video begins in a smokey, dark place, trapped in a cocoon that’s both protective but extremely limiting. As the video progresses, it gets brighter, more radiant and colorful, as each new layer is peeled off and illuminated. I also strived to tell this story in an unconventional sense for a music video: just letting the visuals guide the story and dispensing with the usual ‘singing-along’ shots where artists mouth the words. Instead, I wanted to just focus on the transformation of moving beyond limitations—again and again.

It was meaningful to be able to film this video on the beaches of Fire Island Pines, where I had been a resident DJ for 13 years—until the COVID crisis took that away this summer. And to turn what would otherwise be a sad summer into a playful time to try something different, musical and new. Also, this song about self-empowerment seemed the perfect video for me to direct, edit and star-in myself. This is the third one I’ve done this way, and it’s very artistically satisfying to have a vision for something be so wholly my own — most especially for “Belong.”

I hope to listener and viewer come away feeling inspired in their own lives to create and ‘give birth’ to a vision of themselves. Free of the need for constant approval and validation from others, and instead validating & valuing their own existence within themselves.
